This should be a very interesting, informative and jam-packed day of MGWA activities, so try to attend if you can. Century is a highly-regarded club with a championship course that is often part of the rotation for the Met area sectional qualifying round that immediately precedes the U.S. Open. We’ll be playing the course just 10 days before it begins a renovation agenda. We’ll be joined by VIPs from Cobra Puma Golf brands who will be showcasing equipment on the range and indoors for our presentation, along with providing prizes. On top of all that, for members of our Quill & Tee Golf Club within the MGWA framework, we’ll be featuring both a Member-Guest tournament and the Q&T Club Championship. But, overall, all MGWA members are welcome to attend and play.

About Century:- The formation of the club dates back to 1898 and a nine-hole layout designed by Tom Bendelow on leased land adjacent to the Long Island Sound in the Throgs Neck section of the Bronx. The membership moved in 1904 to a 100-acre site in Greenburgh, NY, where an 18-hole course designed by Herbert Strong was built along with a clubhouse and tennis courts. But with a growing membership and limited land, Century sold its Greenburgh site to Metropolis Country Club and purchased its current 175-acre tract --- at the recommendation of Walter J. Travis --- in 1922. The current Century course was designed by the British firm of H.S. Colt and C.H. Alison, and opened in 1926, with Alison in the U.S. to supervise construction. A modest renovation, overseen by Robert Trent Jones, took place in the mid 1960s. In 2005, a golf course master plan was implemented that included the addition of a short game practice area, drainage improvements, bunker renovation, fairway contouring and green surround enhancements. New tees have lengthened the par 71 course to 7,005 yards. Four sets of tees begin at 5,560 yards. The upcoming renovation, to be completed in stages, is being crafted by architect Keith Foster of Middleburg, Va. (www.keithfostergolfarchitect.com). A renovation specialist, Foster has worked on numerous notable courses across the U.S., including Fresh Meadow and Sands Point on Long Island in the Met area.

Over the years, many notable businessmen, bankers, industrialists, entrepreneurs, diplomats and others have been Century members. Hall of Famer Ben Hogan joined Century as an assistant in 1938, then served the next two years as head pro. Two-time British Amateur champ and three-time U.S. Walker Cup team member Dick Siderowf played out of Century. On July 25 this summer, the club was honored by the Met Golf Writers Assn. as our Club of the Year.

Competition:   Back by popular acclaim, our Quill & Tee Golf Club is offering a Member-Guest event, running concurrently with the Q&TGC Club Championship individual competition. All Q&TGC attendees will be entered in the Club Championship, which will be scored at scratch. If entries warrant, the event will be conducted in flights. Additionally, Q&TGC members who sign up may invite a non MGWA guest to join you and compete in a two-person Member-Guest event, with handicaps. All competitors must maintain verifiable USGA-GHIN handicap indexes. Prizes will be awarded in both Member-Guest and Club Championship competitions, along with Nearest to the Pin contests.

Caddies:   Forecaddies will accompany each group. Fee is $40 per putter, plus tip.

Dress Code:   Collared shirts. No jeans or cargo shorts. Hats should not be worn in the main clubhouse, except in locker rooms and golf shop. You are welcome to use locker and shower facilities.

Entries:   Enter either online via www.metgolfwriters.org or return the attached form with a check, payable to Met Golf Writers, for $80 per player to Kate Keller, MGWA Executive Administrator, 49 Knollwood Rd, Elmsford, NY 10523, by 3 pm Friday, August 26. No refunds after that date. If you are listing a preference for group pairing, please make sure others are coming. Some pairings may be based on member-guest considerations.

Please don’t wait until the last minute to sign up.
